Q. Where is camp?

A. Each Camp is held at either Toogoolawah State High School or Windaroo Valley State High School. Check the individual camps page to find which site your camp is at.

Q. Where do we sleep?

A. We take over a couple of class rooms and convert them into dorms.  This may seem a little rough, but if you’ve come to camp to sleep then you may have missed something.

Q. What are the computers like?

A. Each school keeps their machines as close to the current bleeding edge of technology as possible.  We have always been impressed at the setup they maintain.

Q. Do I need to bring a computer? Can I bring a computer?

A. Education Queensland policy forbids students to bring their own machines to the school. Leaders are given special dispensation as they have commercial applications that are used on camp.

You can bring your favourite headphones if you desire but these are brought to camp at the owner’s risk.  No internal components (eg. Hard drives, RAM, Video cards etc) should be brought either.  All school machines have regular hardware monitoring control checks.

Q. What do I bring to camp?

A.

  • Sleeping bad or bedding
  • Pillow
  • Air bed or camping mat to lie on
  • A jumper and jeans (it gets cool at night)
  • Hat (it gets hot and sunny too sometimes)
  • Sun screen lotion
  • Running shoes
  • Normal day clothes
  • Paint Shirt
  • Biro/Pencils
  • Bible (if you have one)
  • An air bed or sleeping mat
  • Toiletries (e.g. Soap, Face-Washer, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Shampoo, Brush, etc.)
  • Bath Towel
  • Any medicines (these need to be kept with our First Aid Officers)
  • Pocket money for the Canteen
  • USB Keys are OK too, but are brought at the owner’s risk.
  • Did we mention an air bed or sleeping mat to lie on?

Please do NOT Bring:

  • CD / Tape / Radio / MP3 players
  • Nintendo or similar
  • Mobile Phones
  • Digital Cameras, etc (camp memories will be sent home on a DVD)

Q. Should I bring Software/Games etc?

A. For various reasons (licensing, Educations Queensland’s computer policies), we won’t be able to install any software that you bring, so best to leave it at home.

Q. What sort of games will we play?

A. We have a standing rule for games that has only had one modification in the past 11 years: No Blood and Gore. This has meant that most First Person Shooters have pretty much been scrapped.

Q. What is Trosnoth?

A. Trosnoth is a computer game made by some of the Übertweak leaders (and some of the campers) for use on camp. It’s proven to be a camp favourite over the past few years. The game is being continually improved, and campers are often the first to play with the new features.

Q. What are the Workshops this year?

A. Each camp has its own Electives, but some in the past have included:

  • Robotics
  • Web Design
  • Programming
  • Sound Recording
  • Film School
  • Ray Tracing
  • 3D Modelling
  • Photography
  • Stop Motion
  • 3D Game Design
  • Cryptography
  • Space Flights (Yeah right…..)

Q. So we’ll be indoors for the whole week?

A. Not at all! We have a heap of fun outside too! Many past campers describe the Outdoor Games as their highlight from camp!

Q. How much time do we spend on computers?

A. Übertweak is a technology camp, not just a computer camp. Campers spend between 2 and 4 hours per day on computers as well as a similar amount of time in physical activities. In addition, campers will get an opportunity to use different technology that is not on computers, such as robotics and sound recording.
